ChatGPT Search
How Can My Business Show Up in ChatGPT Search?
Your business can appear in ChatGPT search when the service finds information relevant to someone’s question. You can make your website easier to access and understand, but you cannot buy a guaranteed organic recommendation by adding a file, repeating a phrase, or changing a page title.
For a local service business, start with two questions: can the search service access your public information, and does that information help someone evaluate your business?
Check search access before rewriting the whole site
OpenAI’s publisher guidance says that OAI-SearchBot access matters for inclusion in summaries and snippets. Ask your website provider to review robots.txt and any security rules that could prevent that crawler from reaching important public pages.
That review should be specific. A successful request from your own browser does not prove a crawler is allowed through. Equally, a crawler visit does not prove your business appeared in an answer.
Search access and model training are separate decisions. OpenAI identifies GPTBot as a control for potential training use. Do not assume you must enable every AI crawler to participate in search, and do not change privacy or access settings without understanding what each one controls.
Give the answer something accurate to work with
Start with the facts a prospective customer needs: business name, services, real coverage, contact information, and the process for an inquiry. Use consistent information across your own pages.
A sentence such as “We create custom websites for service businesses” is a starting point. A useful page goes further: what the service includes, what the customer supplies, what ongoing support covers, and how to ask about a project.
On ZDM’s contractor website page, those decisions are supported by project examples and scope information. That is an example of useful content organization, not evidence that the page earns a particular ChatGPT placement.
Add evidence that belongs to your business
Show real work and explain it. For a landscaper, that might mean a completed patio with a description of the scope. For a website company, it might mean a client website and a clear account of what was built.
Separate facts from promises. A project gallery demonstrates what you can show. It does not establish a conversion rate unless you have measured one. Customer reviews should be genuine, attributable, and used with appropriate permission.
Avoid writing dozens of near-identical answers whose only difference is a town name. A person comparing services needs specific information, not a larger quantity of pages that say the same thing.
Distinguish mentions, citations, and visits
An answer might mention your company without linking to your site. It might cite a page as a source without recommending the business. A linked citation might receive no clicks. Record these as different observations.
For a small test, choose a few realistic customer questions. Save the exact wording, date, product or mode used, response, and cited URLs. Run fresh conversations and note relevant location context. Treat the results as samples, not a permanent ranking or a reliable percentage of all users who will see you.
OpenAI says ChatGPT referral links can include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Review referral traffic in analytics, then separately review actual inquiries. Do not count a mention as a customer or assume every AI-influenced visit will be identifiable.
Choose a concrete first improvement
Pick one important service page. Confirm access, clarify the service and coverage, add relevant evidence, and test the contact route. Record what changed and when. This creates a useful baseline for later review.
Our broader AI-search visibility guide explains how this fits with normal website maintenance. If you want help checking the page, request a website audit. We can review access and content without promising an AI recommendation.
